Electronic Bank Realization Certificate (e-BRC)

Overview

The e-BRC (Electronic Bank Realization Certificate) is a digitally generated certificate issued by Authorized Dealer (AD) banks and transmitted directly to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It acts as official proof that export proceeds have been realized in foreign currency against a particular shipment.
Under India’s Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), exporters must demonstrate that they have received payment for their exports within the prescribed time. The e-BRC system eliminates manual documentation and ensures seamless integration between banks and DGFT systems.
This document plays a critical role in export compliance, redemption of export obligations, and claiming benefits under schemes such as RoDTEP, Advance Authorization, EPCG, etc.

Benefits of e-BRC

1. Legal Proof of Export Realization
e-BRC serves as an authenticated confirmation from the bank that the exporter has received payment from the overseas buyer. It is a key compliance document under FEMA and FTP regulations.

2. Mandatory for Export Incentives
Without e-BRC, exporters cannot claim government benefits such as RoDTEP, duty drawback (in some cases), or fulfill conditions under various DGFT schemes.

3. Fully Digital & Paperless System
The entire process is electronic—banks directly upload the data to DGFT. This reduces paperwork, minimizes errors, and improves efficiency.

4. Faster Processing of Claims
Since data is auto-validated and available on the DGFT portal, exporters can quickly apply for incentives without delays caused by manual verification.

5. Easy Tracking & Transparency
Exporters can track the status of e-BRCs in their DGFT login. It ensures transparency and reduces dependency on physical follow-ups.

6. Essential for Export Obligation (EO) Fulfillment
For schemes like Advance Authorization or EPCG, e-BRC is required to prove that export obligations have been successfully completed.

How to apply for e-BRC

Step 1: Export Shipment Execution
The exporter ships goods/services to an overseas buyer and generates export documents such as invoice and shipping bill.

Step 2: Payment Realisation
The foreign buyer remits payment through authorized banking channels in foreign currency. The exporter receives payment in their bank account.

Step 3: Bank Verification
The Authorized Dealer (AD) bank verifies the transaction details such as invoice value, shipping bill, and remittance details.

Step 4: e-BRC Generation & Upload
After verification, the bank generates the e-BRC and uploads it electronically to the DGFT server.

Step 5: Reflection on DGFT Portal
The e-BRC automatically reflects in the exporter’s DGFT account linked with their IEC.

Step 6: Mapping & Utilization
Exporter maps the e-BRC with relevant shipping bills and uses it for:
  • Claiming export incentives
  • Redemption of licenses
  • Compliance reporting

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

e-BRC is an electronic certificate issued by banks confirming that export payment has been received in foreign currency. It is important because it serves as official proof of realization, which is mandatory for claiming export incentives and fulfilling obligations under DGFT schemes. Without e-BRC, exporters may face rejection of benefits and compliance issues.

Once the exporter receives payment, the Authorized Dealer bank verifies the transaction and uploads the e-BRC electronically to the DGFT system. The certificate is then automatically reflected in the exporter’s DGFT account linked with their IEC, usually within a few working days depending on the bank’s processing timeline.

If the e-BRC is not visible or contains incorrect details such as wrong amount or shipping bill number, the exporter must immediately contact their bank. Only the bank has the authority to correct, cancel, or re-upload the e-BRC. Timely correction is important to avoid delays in claiming benefits or completing compliance requirements.

Yes, a single e-BRC can cover multiple shipping bills if one payment is received for several exports. The exporter can map the same e-BRC accordingly on the DGFT portal and use it for various purposes such as incentive claims, license redemption, or compliance filings, depending on eligibility.
